Who can foster?
Fostering is open to people from any background, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, culture, sexuality, gender identity, marital status and the type of home they live in.
The main criteria for fostering with Plymouth City Council is that you:
- Are 21 or over (there is no upper age limit)
- Have a spare bedroom in your home
Are you ready to open your heart and home to support a local child or young person?
Did you know:
- You can work as well as foster – together we ensure that fostering works for you and the children you’re looking after
- You can foster if you have pets (as long as they are safe around children)
- You can foster if you have your own children living with you
- You can foster if you don’t have children of your own
Qualities we look for in a foster carer:
- Patience, understanding, empathy and compassion
- Being open-minded, non-judgemental and accepting
- Good sense of humour and an ability to have fun!
Your home and lifestyle
- It doesn’t matter whether you own or rent your home, but you will need a suitable spare bedroom for a child or young person
- You can foster if you don’t have children of your own
- You can be working, retired or unemployed – children require different levels of care, which is always considered when we match children with carers
- You need to be a UK citizen or have leave to remain in the UK
